Special Olympics World Games 2009
Boise, Idaho, USA

The Floor Hockey competition was held at ExpoCenter in Boise, Idaho, USA on the week of Feb. 7^th – 13^th 2009. With approximately 1,175 athletes from 82 teams representing 70 Special Olympics programs from around the world. The ExpoCenter hosted the Floor Hockey competition World Winter Games with 7 hockey courts using Mylec Hockey goals in each rink. Events offered include Traditional Team Competition (Male), Traditional Team Competition (Female) and Unified Team Competition from Yemen, South Africa, El Salvador, China, Japan, Uruguay, India, Honduras, Spain, Costa Rico, Mexico, Algeria, Poland, Russia, Czech Rep., Greece, Germany, Chile, Kuwait and the United States. Mylec a proud sponsor of the 2009 Special Olympics Floor Hockey competitions and was the only supplier to distribute helmets, shin pads, goalie equipment, sticks and player equipment at the World Winter Games.

US Men Finish Fourth at World Championships

The United States men’s ball hockey team posted its best finish ever at the ISBHF World Championships at Pilsen, Czech Republic, June 13-20. The US went 5-2, beating four-time defending champ Canada 5-4 in overtime in the quarterfinals before losing 5-4 to India in the semis and 5-2 to Slovakia in the bronze-medal game. Denny Schlegel of Buffalo was named the tournament’s outstanding forward. Defenseman Andrew Hildreth and forward Bobby Housser (both of Leominster, MA) were selected to the all-tournament team. Harrisburg Tournament Donates Portion of Proceeds to ASHI

The American Street Hockey Institute would like to thank George Tarantino for donating a portion of the proceeds from his Superbowl Bye Week Tournament in Harrisburg to ASHI and our efforts. George has run a premiere event in Harrisburg for several years and this year was no exception. ASHI is proud to be a part of it and thankful to be a beneficiary from this donation.

ASHI Announces GM of the USA Women's National Team

ASHI is pleased to announce that Mary O’Halloran will be returning as GM for the Women’s Team USA national team to compete in Slovakia at the 2011 ISBHF World Championships. Mary has been involved with Women’s street hockey for over 20 years and was GM of the 2009 team that competed in the Czech Republic.

PENGUINS POWER PLAY TOURNAMENT DRAWS 49 TEAMS!

The NHL's Penguins and Street Hockey USA hosted the 4th annual Penguins Power Play Street Hockey Tournament Nov. 6-7 at Greater Pittsburgh Dekhockey Center, Penn Hills. Champions were crowned in three youth divisions and four adult divisions. Dave Hanson of “Slap Shot” movie fame was on hand for the 7-9 year-old final.

The 2009 Hall of Fame Can Am Weekend was a huge success off and on the rink. Inducted into the Street Hockey Hall of Fame were four former Leominster Ram players, Chris Housser # 9, Dave Guitar # 7, Ray Richard # 10, Mark Holman # 6 and Dan Broderick #5 of the Greater Boston Seahawks. All 5 players had famed careers in the sport of Dek/Street and Ball Hockey. The players were honored at center rink before the Semi Finals with personal banners. All the ceremomies and finals were shot by local access cable LATV.

Three first-time champions were crowned at the 14th annual Street Hockey USA National Championships April 24-26 at Robert Morris University Island Sports Center and Iceoplex at Southpointe, both near Pittsburgh: The Buffalo Legend Killers won C, the St. Catharines (ON) National Jets won D and Route 51 (Belle Vernon, PA) won Novice.
